Toyo Kohan’s Activities

Our technological laboratory is located next to our production and development base, the Kudamatsu Plant of Toyo Kohan. In its daily activities, this laboratory takes a global point of view to conduct a wide range of research, including the development of new technologies for surface treatments and equipment, using its unique expertise to delve into electronics-related fields and other areas.

Products such as Hi-Top (tin-free steel) and Hi-Pet (laminated steel sheet), as well as practical applications of hydraulic tension levelers, hardened materials, aluminum substrates for magnetic disks, and clad materials (materials made up of substrates of different metals) demonstrate the advantages of our R&D capabilities.

Yamaguchi Prefecture Special Commendation for Industrial Technology (for development of DNA chip and dedicated analyzer)

Received Yamaguchi Prefecture Special Commendation for Industrial Technology

Toyo Kohan was awarded the Yamaguchi Prefecture Special Commendation for Industrial Technology for the results of our joint research with Yamaguchi University and Asahi Kohsan Corporation on the “research and development of an in vitro genetic diagnostic system for personalized medicine.”

What is the Yamaguchi Prefecture Special Commendation for Industrial Technology?

The award was established in 2018 to honor company groups with locations in Yamaguchi Prefecture that have made outstanding achievements in business through industry–academia–government collaboration based on innovative technology utilizing Yamaguchi Prefecture’s R&D subsidies in growth fields such as the medical sector, which are a priority issue for the future.

  • June 2001

National Commendation for Invention (Keidanren Chairman’s Prize (clad materials))

National Commendation for Invention (Keidanren Chairman’s Prize)

Invention of technology for manufacturing clad materials using low-distortion room temperature bonding

Toyo Kohan developed clad materials that use the “surface activation sealant method in a strong vacuum,” successfully commercializing this process in 2000.
(Cladding refers to covering with a layer of metal)
The invention of this technology led to our receiving the one of the most prestigious awards in Japan, the National Commendation for Invention (Keidanren Chairman’s Prize).

    Description of Invention

We successfully bonded together two different metals in a vacuum at ambient temperature. Clad materials created with this invention have the advantages of little distortion resulting from the bonding of the materials, as well as a clean, flat bonding interface. Furthermore, this method allows bonding of materials that could not be bonded with conventional technology.

The Okochi Memorial Grand Technology Prize (TULC)

The Okochi Memorial Grand Technology Prize

Development and application of metal can manufacturing technology with high quality, low cost, and low environmental impact (TULC)
Toyo Kohan and Toyo Seikan Co., Ltd. combined all of our efforts to develop and create a practical application of TULC application technology. As a result, we received one of the most prestigious awards in Japan, the Okochi Memorial Grand Technology Prize (Grand Prize: the highest award among the Okochi Prizes).

What is the Okochi Memorial Grand Technology Prize?

This is an award awarded to projects that have contributed to the advance of academics by achieving original research results in production engineering, and that have published papers or made reports that have academic value.
